When 1Isreal+APCO+Ethos+Khairy+Najib = 1Malaysia

Khairy Jamaluddin said that Anwar Ibrahim should not be too hasty to accuse the government for its links to Apco when the opposition leader too has connections with several personalities on the global consultancy firm's advisory council.

"If Anwar's allegations are true, then he also has direct links with what he has alleged today. This is not only one individual, but six individuals with connections to Anwar in the International Advisory Council of Apco,” said Khairy.

And here is Anwar's reaction.......

“It seems like Rembau (Khairy Jamaludin) has become a spokesperson for APCO,” said the opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his response towards Khairy’s statement in the Parliament today.

“I know he (Khairy) was trying to run from his involvement with Omar Mustafa and APCO that could affect the national security as it involves intelligence,” said the Permatang Pauh MP.

And until now, there is no clarification or denial made by the government. The Prime Minister has to come to explain this matter as it is a very serious matter,” he added.

“I repeat what I’ve said in my speech. A Royal Commission should be formed to investigate this matter. It is important because it could threaten national security,” he added.

Questioned on Khairy’s statement that he brought up this issue to distract people’s attention on the problems that exist in PKR, Anwar said that he was not the one who was asked to be given a chance to speak but he was ordered by the Speaker to do so.

“I’m not asking for a chance to give a speech but I was directed by the Speaker. If I do not do so, I will be prosecuted. So there is no issue of me trying to distract people’s attention,” said Anwar.

Thats why Khairy is defending APCO......read here.

The Apco-Israeli-1Malaysia link...........

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today produced two documents in Parliament to back up his allegations on the links between global public relations firm Apco Worldwide, the Israeli government and 1Malaysia.

One of the documents was the agreement signed between Apco and the Malaysian government, which was witnessed by Premier Najib Razak's press secretary Tengku Sharifuddin Tengku Ahmad.

The presence of Tengku Sharifuddin, Anwar said, underlies the importance of Apco to the Najib government as normal contracts are signed by government officers. Anwar asked why a Najib's aide be at the signing of the contract.

The other document was the deal inked between Apco and the Israeli government when Ehud Barak - who later as premier adopted the One Israel slogan - was the head of the Israeli military.

Anwar claimed that the agreement was positive proof of links between Apco and Israel. The opposition leader also pointed out to the slew of ex-Israeli government officials which made up Apco's list of officers and consultants.

Chief among them being Doron Bergerbest-Eilon, who heads the Israeli Security Agency, Itamar Rabinovichk, who was formerly with Israeli's internal intelligence organ Shin Bet, and Shimon Stein, a former Israeli ambassador to Germany.

As for 1Malaysia, a slogan popularised by Najib, the Permantang Pauh MP alluded to links between Apco executives and the Malaysian government even before the consultancy company was hired. He said that members of Apco staff were already working with the Najib government even before the contract was signed through the recommendation of Ethos Consultancy, a company founded by former Najib special officer Omar Mustapha.

“At the time, an Apco staff member was already stationed in the premier's office after he took power. This was way before 1Malaysia was announced,” contended Anwar.

“Therefore, in providing 'communications support' to the Malaysian government, Apco may have worked with Najib on 1Malaysia.”

According to Anwar, top Apco executives were operating in a company called MindTeam Sdn Bhd. MindTeam's officials included Paul Stedlan, who now heads Apco Malaysia, and Margery Krause, Apco's founder and CEO.

"It is their strategy to work using associates companies to operate in different countries."

Anwar said that the documents will be given to the House speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia.

Anwar rubbish Apco's denial

The Permatang Pauh MP also rubbished Apco's denial over its involvement in coining the 1Malaysia slogan.

"It is a part of Apco's duty to protect those who employ them, which include denying their involvement."

Referring to the contract signed between Apco and its clients, Anwar stated that there is a particular emphasis on confidentiality and deniability when it comes to information of the actual scope of Apco's involvement.

"It is easy for them (the Najib administration) to ask Apco to draft a statement denying its involvement."

The former deputy prime minister also demanded Najib to explain in Parliament the Apco contract, including the cost of engaging its consultancy services. Anwar also urged the government to immediately terminate the Apco contract and set up a royal commission to investigate the matter.

After Anwar's lengthy explanation in Parliament, deputy House speaker Ronald Kiandee said he cannot decide whether the opposition leader should be referred to the powerful privileges committee for further action to be taken.

He said that BN parliamentarians will need to table a motion if they want to refer Anwar to the committee.

What in the hell was Najib thinking when he employed this Isreal link APCO Worldwide org. for consultancy services? Or maybe it was Bik Mama's 'punya' idea, got side income ma.......

AG's 'prosecutorial dishonesty'........

Attorney-General (AG) Abdul Gani Patail has been accused of “dishonesty” and the lack of even-handedness in prosecuting Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy.

Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair said this in a statement today, in which he questioned why similar action has not been taken against Dr Chua Soi Lek, who has admitted to involvement in oral sex.

Sankara did not name Chua, but referred to the video footage implicating “a former minister of health of the ruling (coalition) ,who has just won the presidency of his party”.

“The (DVD) has been in the public domain for about two years. The video shows him engaging in oral sex with a woman. He also publicly admitted that he was the actor in the video.

“Indeed oral sex with or without consent is no different from anal sex and it clearly falls within the same Section 377B of the Penal Code under which Anwar is charged.”

In pointing out that several police reports have been lodged (against Chua), Sankara noted that the AG has refused to charge him “when incontrovertible evidence is staring at all”.

“This is discrimination of the highest order and a clear testament of the AG's bias. I therefore call upon the AG to drop the charge against Anwar.”

Sankara later added in a text-message: “The AG is bound to act according to law and Article 8 of the federal constitution which states that 'all people are equal before the law and entitled to the equal protection of the law'.

“If the AG persists with the prosecution of Anwar, then it will amount to flagrant political persecution (that is) in serious contravention of the constitution.”

Chua has openly admitted that he was the person in a sex video recorded in a hotel room, but attributed to the exposé to ulterior motives on the part of political rivals.

He quit his posts in the government and the party, but later made a comeback as MCA deputy president. Yesterday, he was elected to the top party post.

Anwar has been charged with sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 25, on June 26, 2008. The trial is underway.

Hulu Selangor a safe seat for BN........

When deputy MIC president G Palanivel was chosen to defend the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the March 2008 general election, it was considered a ‘safe seat’ for the Barisan Nasional. This was because the Malay and Indian voters in the constituency had traditionally given their backing to the ruling coalition.

Furthermore, Palanivel was a deputy minister and was considered a prospective successor to veteran MIC head S Samy Vellu, in the event the elderly politician decideds to step down from his party's top post. The Barisan had no inkling that a tsunami was coming and when it came, the seat was swept away with 81 others, eroding the two-thirds majority in Parliament that the Barisan (and its predecessor the Alliance) had enjoyed for over 50 years.

Samy Vellu, who had held his Sungai Siput since 1974, was also shockingly unseated by poltical novice Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj of mosquito party, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (though he contested under the PKR banner). As it similarly turned out in Hulu Selangor, a large chunk of the Malay voters had switched to the opposing camp, giving PKR flag bearer Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad his first parliamentary victory.

No such thing as 'safe seat' anymore

It did not matter that Palanivel only lost by 198 votes to Zainal Abidin, a former Umno stalwart, three-term state assemblyman and ex-deputy mentri besar, who defected to the PKR in 2005. The bottom line is, the Barisan can no longer consider Hulu Selangor – or any other –a safe seat.

A by-election is now due in the kawasan, following Zainal Abidin’s death from brain cancer last Thursday. The Election Commission meets on April 2 to decide on the nomination and polling dates for the by-election, the 10th since the 2008 general polls.

In the by-elections that had been held in the past two years, the Barisan had won only two - in Batang Ai in Sarawak and Bagan Pinang, Negri Sembilan – and had boycotted one – in Penanti, Penang. It lost the others to the PKR (one parliament and one state seat) and PAS (two parliament and two state seats).

The Penanti by-election, with the absence of the Barisan, recorded the lowest voter turnout in Malaysia’s electoral history. Only 46% came out to cast their ballot papers, among the more than 15,300 people eligible to vote. The Barisan felt it would not have served any purpose to join the race in Penanti because it was not prompted by a death or any irregularities in the previous general election.

While the Barisan frowns on the practice of having foced by-elections, the coalition forgot that it had set the precedent in November 1999 when it created fresh polls for Cabinet minister Abu Hassan Omar to step down from his parliamentary seat and contest a state seat so that he could be appointed Selangor mentri besar.

Abu Hassan resigned as MB about two years later after being implicated in a sex scandal that dragged his sister-in-law into the issue. He told the media he quit because of ailing health. The Bagan Pinang polls last September gave the Barisan its sweetest by-election victory in recent times and former Negri Sembilan mentri besar Isa Abdul Samad – a villain when he was suspended as an Umno vice-resident because of money politics – was hailed as a hero when he romped home to a big win the race.

So, it is not surprising that the Barisan has since been in an upbeat mood. While taking the seat with a comfortable majority of more than 5,400 votes had buoyed the Barisan’s confidence, the subsequent in-fighting in the PKR and the suspicions cast on the DAP over its ‘Middle Malaysia’ stance, have further boosted the morale of the multi-party coalition. It probably can’t wait to test its might again in Hulu Selangor.Furthermore, the three state seats in the constituency - Hulu Bernam, Batang Kali and Kuala Kubu Baru – all belonged to the barisan, an indication there is strong support for it in the kawasan.

This is probably a factor in the mind of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak when he told reporters on Friday that the Barisan’s chances of winning back the parliamentary seat are very bright.

The speculation at the moment is that the PKR would offer the candidature to prominent lawyer Zaid Ibrahim, a former Cabinet minister in charge of judicial matters and one of the prime movers of a soon-to-be completed Pakatan Rakyat charter. He is, at the moment, the only key leader in the PKR that is either not an elected representative or a Senator. He has only the reputation of being a rebel Cabinet member when he was a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department during his Umno days.

Umno members have also got wind of this speculation and have recommended a ‘reserve’ nominee from the party, in case Najib decides to put up a Malay candidate. It is learnt that top of their list is former Selangor mentri besar Muhammmad Muhammad Taib,

“We had a former mentri besar in the Bagan Pinang race. Didn’t Isa gave the seat to the Barisan at the time when it needed it most?” asked an Umno supporter in an SMS.

“Mat Tyson (a popular nickname for Muhammad) still carries a lot of respect and influence. Why not him?”

The constituency has 63,000 voters, comprising Malays (51%), Chinese (26%), Indians (19%) and about 1,000 Orang Asli and others.— Shah A Dadameah,Malaysian Mirror

“Ia bertujuan rampas hak keistimewaan orang Melayu, menghapuskan raja-raja Melayu.

P94 Hulu Selangor - Odds in favour of BN.....

A five percent voter swing is expected at the Hulu Selangor by-election as BN has been gaining political mileage in the area, said a local MIC source.

PKR's Hulu Selangor parliamentarian Zainal Abidin Ahmad, 71, passed away yesterday, paving the way for the 10th by-election since the 2008 general election. Zainal Abidin, who had succumbed to brain cancer, beat MIC deputy president G Palanivel by a slim majority of 198 votes.

"Palanivel has been working very hard to secure the area for almost six months now," said the source.

According to him, Palanivel - who held the seat for two team - has programmes and activities every two weeks in remote locations of Hulu Selangor, including the former colonial town of Kuala Kubu Bharu. However, if BN decides not to cast candidates who had formerly lost their seats, it could go to a younger candidate within MIC, he projected.

Hulu Selangor is a semi-urban mixed seat of 63,539 voters of whom 53.9 percent are Malay, Chinese (26.7 percent) and Indians (19 precent). BN has a good chance of winning back the seat as it won all three state seats under the Hulu Selangor constituencies in 2008 - Kuala Kubu Bharu (MCA), Batang Kali (Umno) and Hulu Bernam (Umno).

Evasive on the chances for an Umno candidate to be fielded as Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak only recently had promised to dedicate RM15 million for public flats repair works in the constituency, the source stressed that the Indian vote was the trump card.

"If it's not Palanivel (right), there is a likelihood that (MIC) information chief P Kamalanathan to be next best option," he said. The Indian minority in the area has been rather dissatisfied with the Pakatan government, said the source, dismissing speculation that PKR could retain its seat.

Zainal Abidin formerly held the Dusun Tua state seat, under the Hulu Langat parliamentary constituency, on the Barisan Nasional ticket three consecutive times - in 1990, 1995 and 1999. He had been Cheras Umno chief and had also headed Hulu Langat Umno for several terms.

Zainal Abidin joined PKR in 2005 after a fray with Umno.

This will be the country's 10th by-election since the 2008 general elections.

source:malaysiakini

PKR got to work extremely hard if it wants to retain Hulu Selangor. A traditional UMNO stronghold, but the seat was given to MIC during the past elections. PKR victory in 2008 was a wafer thin 198 vote's margin. In fact the spoilt votes exceeded the majority obtained by 9 to 1. Gues the spoilt were from UMNO hardcore members who refused to either vote the BN or PKR candidate.

However, with the strong support of the rakyat and fellow Pakatan leaders, hopefully PKR will be victorious.

Is IGP Musa Hassan a law graduate from the UK......

A police report has been lodged against Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan for giving false testimony about his educational qualifications during Anwar Ibrahim's corruption trial in 1998. According to the report lodged today at the Damasara police station in Kuala Lumpur by Anwar's lawyer R Sivarasa, Musa, the investigating officer for Anwar's case then, had allegedly told the court that he had a law degree.

However, in 2009, Sivarasa said that during the corruption trial of former Commercial Crimes Investigation Department chief Ramli Yusuff, Musa had told the court that he, in fact, held a 'diploma in law and management studies'.

"The IGP had given a false statement during cross-examination in Anwar's case by stating that he holds a law degree while in reality he only has a diploma in law," said Sivarasa, who is also PKR vice-president and MP for Subang.

"I believe the motive behind Musa's statement was to increase his credibility during Anwar's trial," he added

Interview repeats alleged untruth

Sivarasa also revealed that Ramli Yusuff 's case was dismissed last year by Justice Supang Lian on the grounds that the evidence provided by the 75th witness, Musa Hassan, was 'unreliable and to be disregarded'. Sivarasa said the inspector-general of the police should be charged under the Section 193 of the Penal Code for lying to the court.

The lawyer further alleged that Musa had also lied in an interview conducted by the The Star newspaper in 2006. The article had then referred to Musa as 'a law graduate from the UK'.

"I hope the police will carry out a fair investigation on this matter without fear or favour," said Sivarasa.

Also present were Petaling Jaya Selatan MP Hee Loy Sian and Sivarasa's personal secretary Peter Chong.

The difficult trials of Anwar Ibrahim.........

I met Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of the Malaysian opposition, in the ornate surroundings of the Landmark Hotel in London last week. He was remarkably relaxed for a man who is due to be put on trial, on charges of sodomy next week, which is a crime in Malaysia punishable with a long jail term.

If convicted, this would be a return to a prison cell for Anwar. He was arrested in the late 1990s and served six years in solitary confinement on previous charges of sodomy (later over-turned) and corruption.

Yet for a man about to undergo a humiliating and dangerous ordeal, Anwar seemed in remarkably good form: relaxed, cracking jokes and outwardly convinced that he would beat the rap. I asked him how he could be so laid-back, given the trial that he was about to face. He replied coolly: “It’s not that I’m oblivious to it, or unaffected by it, but you have to just get on with life.” He knows that he can survive prison and he has the support of a staunch and politically-engaged wife and six daughters.

I first met Anwar in 1992, when he was Malaysian finance minister. At the time, the going was good, both for Anwar and for Malaysia. The country was booming and the young finance minister was widely regarded as the favoured protégé and heir apparent of Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s long-serving and autocratic prime minister.

Since then, Anwar’s life and career have taken many unexpected turns. In 1998 he fell out with Mahathir, after launching an attack on corruption in Malaysia. He was hit with the criminal charges that landed him in prison.

But Anwar has proved remarkably resilient. He has served time in prison, he has been beaten up in custody, he has faced humiliating personal allegations and he has health problems – in particular, a bad back, that he blames on mistreatment in prison. But nonetheless, he has made a political comeback.

In 2008, Anwar’s opposition coalition won 82 seats in Malaysia’s 222-member parliament. For the first time for many decades it is possible to imagine the ruling party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), losing power. But, as a result, Anwar is a marked man. In the coming days, as well as going on trial, he is likely to be suspended from the Malaysian parliament, following allegations he made about Najib Razak, the prime minister.

Personally, I think if I were in Anwar’s situation, I would have thought seriously about not taking that plane back to Malaysia. But he flew back the next day.

What is it that keeps someone like him going: courage, a strong family, a sense of duty, ambition, stubbornness? Probably, a little bit of all of the above. A sense of destiny also helps. When I asked Anwar if he thought he would one day be prime minister, he smiled and replied yes. - by Gideon Rachman

MCA's Titi Tinggi Adun resigned.........

MCA's Titi Tinggi assemblyperson Yip Sun Onn has resigned from the Perlis state assembly with immediate effect, just as MCA is facing a free-for-all party polls this Sunday.

Perlis speaker Yazid Mat has confirmed with Malaysiakini that he had received his letter of resignation last evening. Yazid said Yip stated in the letter that his resignation was with immediate effect.

“He cited the reason for his resignation was due to his unhappiness with certain party leaders,” he said.

It not clear whether Yip has problems with Perak MCA chief Chew Mei Fun, who is also incumbent Wanita chief. Yazid said will use his powers as Perlis speaker to determine if the seat should be declared vacant.

Since that Yip has resigned as the state representative, it is likely there will be by-election in the coming two months. Yazid however said that he will advise Yip to reconsider his decision. Yip cannot be reached for comment.

Sole MCA state exco

Yip was replaced by Dr Por Choo Cho as the sole MCA state executive councillor in the Perlis cabinet last week on the recommendation from MCA top leaders. Por is Perlis MCA secretary and Indera Kayangan assemblyperson. According to Berita Harian today, Perlis Menteri Besar Dr Md Isa Sabu had been informed of Yip's resignation and he too also asked Yip to reconsider his decision.

Por, when contacted by Malaysiakini, was shocked by the news that Yip had resigned. But when told that Perlis speaker had received Yip's quit letter, Por said he was currently in Kuala Lumpur.

“I need to get more information before I can response to the resignation,” he said.

'Not linked to state cabinet reshuffle'

Meanwhile, Chew said she was aware of Yip's resignation, but told Malaysiakini that party leaders were seeking to persuade him to stay in office.

“We hope he will cool down. The party and the people still need his service,” she said.

Chew also revealed that she heard of Yip's resignation two days ago but she was unable to contact Yip.

“Although he called back yesterday, but unfortunately I missed his call,” she added.

Chew denied that Yip's resignation was related to the state cabinet reshuffle.

“He doesn't look like a man who is upset by the lost of the exco post. We will try to find out what is ailing him,” she said.

When Anwar speaks, they come......

The date is March 18, 2010. The place the London School of Economics, where Anwar Ibrahim is giving a lecture on 'Religion and Pluralism in a Divided World'.

Two hours before the lecture started, the crowd had started to assemble. Half an hour before the doors opened, we were ushered towards the lower basement of the Sheikh Zayed Theatre. The queue was already snaking its way from the door of the lecture theatre and up the stairs to the main reception.

I was in the first hundred but I understand that a lot of people had been turned away. The capacity of this lecture theatre is just under 600 people. Last year, the hall was also oversubscribed when Anwar gave his talk.

This is my first time at a lecture by Anwar. Most people I spoke to were Anwar supporters, who were quick to point out that they had come, mainly for the man, and not so much the lecture topic 'Religion and Pluralism in a Divided World'.

Nevertheless, they were looking forward to the question-and-answer session at the end. A rough breakdown of the crowd is: 85 percent in their early 20s, seven percent in their 30s, five percent in their 40s and 50s, and three percent in their 60s.

It would appear that they were 60 percent Chinese, 25 percent Malay, 10 percent Indian, and five percent Caucasian. They were mostly Malaysians although there were some Singaporeans too.

A lot of students were from other universities, King's College, School of Oriental and African Studies, Brunel. There was a sizeable portion of older people, mainly Malaysians living in UK. Some had come from as far as Birmingham and Newcastle.

Many of those from outside London expressed regret that they were unaware of Anwar's second lecture in London the following evening. Had they known, they would have made arrangements for an overnight stay.

No signs of jet lag

The lecture started promptly at 5.05pm. And when he and his entourage entered the theatre, the whole place broke into thunderous applause. He clearly had mass appeal. It is impossible to believe that he had only just flown in from Kuala Lumpur. He looked fresh and showed no signs of jet lag.

After the introductions from professor John Sidel, Anwar took to the podium and introduced the various members of his entourage - Azmin Ali, Abdul Malik Abul Kassim, and former senator David Yeoh. He informed us that he had spent the morning in meetings with ex-vice president Al Gore and Mary Robinson, former president of the Republic of Ireland.

A transcript of his talk, I am told, will be posted on his website. His opening sentence was a poem from TS Eliot. Throughout his talk, there were various references to past scholars, religious figures, and authors, as well as various books and publications.

It was peppered with personal anecdotes and humour and was very entertaining. He talked about the inclusivity of Islam about 30 years ago in Malaysia and how the current state of Islam, in Malaysia, had somewhat declined, culminating with the recent issues involving the word 'Allah', caning of women and the power of the syariah courts.

The main message was that the UMNO leaders were the ones to be educated about Islam. Hypocrisy, double standards were evident. And he bemoaned how Malaysia was not emulating its neighbour Indonesia, or Turkey - two predominantly Muslim nations, blazing the trail with reforms.

Visible impact

Finally, just as in his opening, he ended his talk with TS Eliot's 'Little Gidding':

What we call the beginning is often the end,
And to make and end is to make a beginning

The end is where we start from.

The talk was under half an hour with the rest of the time devoted to questions, which he fielded at a brisk pace. The questions ranged from Asean's role in Burma and the silence on the treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi, apostasy, Anwar's own failure as deputy prime minister to abolish the ISA, Anwar the young man who was more of a firebrand compared to the older Anwar who was less idealistic, the Orang Asli issue, Malay Muslim women as third-class citizens in Malaysia, Malaysia as a secular or an Islamic state and the last question for which, he says, he would answer at his next lecture in London (as we had run out of time).

The questioner wanted to know if Anwar had any weaknesses and if he felt any need to apologise. Needless to say, many other people did not have the opportunity to put their question to him. He may not have gone into great depth and detail when answering the questions, but the crowd forgave him for that, and he received rapturous applause at the close of the lecture.

The most visible impact was his ability to engage and command attention with the young and old. Without doubt, he has charisma. Another startling observation was how pockets of people went away into little discussion groups in the various cafes and pubs in the area, still discussing the talk.

This, I take to mean that he stimulates thought. I know, because I overheard them.- by Mariam Mokhtar

TG Nik Aziz - Unethical to speak ill of their former colleagues......

PAS spiritual advisor Nik Aziz Nik Mat said it is not ethical for politicians to publicly speak ill of their former colleagues or bosses after they have left their parties. He said any dispute with leaders are best resolved within the party itself, according to the procedures available, such as via the party's general assembly.

"Exposing the defects of their previous leaders in public is an immoral act and even uncivilised," he told reporters here after speaking at a ceramah at Dataran Ilmu here Friday. He was commenting on the disclosures by Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Mohamed Hashim of the botched plan by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to take over the Federal Government by allegedly enticing Barisan Nasional parliamentarians to cross over to the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

Zahrain had alleged that Anwar had "made use of, manipulated and had told that enough Barisan MPs wanted to cross over to Pakatan."

He had also claimed that Anwar informed Pakatan MPs that even the armed forces chief at that time supported the plan of the takeover, which purportedly would happen on Sept 16, 2008. Zahrain named eight MPs from the ruling party who were supposedly on the list of defectors, including:

Abdul Ghapur Salleh (Kalabakan), Anifah Aman (Kimanis), Bung Mokhtar Radin (Kinabatangan), Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi (Batu Pahat), Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar (Jerantut) and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Gua Musang). Two of others - Sabah Progressive Party reps Enchin Majmbun (Sepanggar) and Chua Soon Bui (Tawau) - have since left the Barisan. Zahrain said a deputy Speaker was also on the list but he declined to name him.

Nik Aziz, who is Kelantan Mentri Besar, said Malay politics had become demeaning and this is being watched by the non-Malays. He said they could learn a lesson from the MCA, which pick and drop leaders through internal elections.

"Any party member dissatisfied with a leader could use such internal channels rather than expose his (the leader's) shorcomings in public.

"The approach is not right but there is always an opportunity for errant parties to return to the right track and repent for their wrongdoings."

source:malaysian mirror

Meanwhile, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah dismissed as a tall tale a claim that he was among eight BN MPs set to cross over to enable the opposition form the federal government in 2008.

"I do not want to comment on it. I have been with Umno for 48 years. The claim is a tall tale," he told reporters. Tengku Razaleigh said that if indeed the claim was true, he would now be holding a senior position in the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

"I'm not for sale and not available. If the claim is true, I would have been a leader in PKR," he said.

Anwar - suspension, what a rotten joke.........

The government will decide whether to refer Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to Parliament's powerful special rights and privileges committee over his claims that Prime Minister Najib Razak's '1Malaysia' was a carbon copy of the 'One Israel' concept.Should that be the case, Anwar could face a possible suspension from Parliament. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri said the cabinet would discuss the matter at its weekly meeting tomorrow.

"I will bring this matter to the cabinet to inform the ministers on this allegation which we think is going overboard," said Nazri in response to Anwar's allegation yesterday that Najib's '1Malaysia' idea originated from the Zionist regime.

In response, Anwar Ibrahim has described a possible censure over his allegations in Parliament that 1 Malaysia was copied from Ehud Barak’s 1 Israel a “rotten joke”. The Permatang Pauh MP also insisted that it was a “strange coincidence” both the Malaysian and Israeli administrations had hired public relations consultants, Apco Worldwide.

When quizzed about Apco’s denial of having coined either term, Anwar countered: “Then what are they taking money for? To pay for what? Apco should not be involved in domestic politics in our country.” While admitting that the timing was circumstantial, he said the onus was still on the government to explain Apco’s involvement transparently.

BN had insisted that Apco, was contracted for a sum of RM20 million, was not involved in the conception of “1 Malaysia” and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz has said that the matter of referring the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmaker to the Rights and Privileges Committee would be discussed in the Cabinet.

“Let’s put it in context. I have no problems with Jewish advisors but UMNO leaders have been using this Jewish connection to claim that there is a conspiracy and Anwar is an agent of the Jews,” he said in a press conference after speaking at the London School of Economics yesterday.

Instead, he said that UMNO Youth chief, Khairy Jamaluddin, was the one making false accusations, after the Rembau MP had brought up Anwar’s tenure as chair of the Washington-based Foundation for the Future, which Khairy claimed was a Zionist organisation.

Inikah 1Malaysia?

Anwar - losing it in court but winning it among the rakyat......

Losing it in the courts but winning it among the people - that seems to be the reality for Anwar Ibrahim which must have prompted the withdrawal of his appeal against the High Court judge's refusal to recuse over the latter's alleged bias in Sodomy II.

Before yesterday's announcement of the withdrawal of his appeal, Anwar's legal strategy appeared predicated on challenging every decision that went against him, taking the path of appeal to its highest level of adjudication.

That strategy eventually worked, at least partially, in Sodomy I, though it came after six years of languishing in jail.Besides being effective at displaying the merits of his argument that he was being hard done by in the courts, the strategy of relentless appeal was poised to exploit to best effect the deliberative wheels of justice that are said to be slow.

Now, it appears there is little hope of review and reconsideration for Anwar Ibrahim in the judicial precincts of Chief Justice Zaki Azmi. After enduring a series of judicial setbacks, the most recent being the Federal Court's dismissal of his appeal over the legitimacy of his sacking as deputy prime minister by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in September 1998, it seems that Anwar is wearied of the process.

The nub of the Federal Court's argument was that the Yang Di Pertuan Agong had only a bystander's role in the process of sacking a minister whereas another panel had only recently construed that the Perak ruler had more than merely that role in the dismissal of Menteri Besar Nizar Jamaluddin's Pakatan Rakyat government a year ago. Consistency of reasoning is not the strong suit of several among Zaki's cohort.

Master of his fate

It's the judicial version of Humpty Dumpty's argument in Lewis Caroll's Through the Looking Glass, to wit, "When I use a word, it just means anything I say it means - neither more or less." When Humpty Dumpty's interlocutor in the exchange concerning semantics queries the resultant inconsistency in meanings, she gets the reply: "The question is who is to be master - that is all." Well, for Anwar at least, the question of who is to be the master of his fate does not lie with the judiciary alone.

In the courtroom of public opinion, Anwar appears not to be losing, despite defections from his PKR party by MPs from the north of the Peninsula. Even there it seems a similar asymmetry is at work: even as his party loses MPs, his road show gains more and more crowds, just as his felling by the courts contrasts with the swelling crowds for his 'meet the people' sessions.

The withdrawal of his appeal to disqualify judge Mohamed Zabidin Diah in Sodomy II must be linked to the rousing receptions he has received for his road shows in the last 10 days at least.Something like 60,000 people turned up at Batu Sembilan in Alor Star last Saturday to hear him. This followed the 20,000 that showed up in Seberang Jaya the previous Wednesday, hard upon the 10,000 who braved drenching weather in Seremban the previous night.

In the courtroom of public opinion, Anwar appears not to be losing. Judicially he may be down, so too among some elected legislators. By popular count, things may be different. Since the ballot box is the final arbiter of a democratic polity's distempers, resort to that device must be the final resolution of this morally marred and historically adrift moment in our history.- Terence Netto

MACC 's political agenda in Penang.........

A former municipal councillor has hinted that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had a political agenda in discontinuing investigations against former Pakatan Rakyat leaders in Penang. Former Seberang Perai municipal councillor Amizudin Ahmad claimed that the probe - in relation to illegal activities involving quarry operations - was closed because the leaders have since rejoined Umno.

Among those named was former Penang deputy chief minister 1 Mohamad Fairus Khairuddin. The MACC had already cleared him last April, citing lack of evidence against him. In a letter faxed to Penang MACC director Lathifah Md Yatim, he questioned the commission's decision.

Amizudin, the Kepala Batas PKR Youth chief, said he had submitted sufficient evidence to the commission and had been questioned by its officials over a 10-hour session last year.

"The commission was then rather confident that this was a strong case and was willing to go against its own policy to make this case public. Therefore, if this case is closed now, then I will be very disappointed," he added in the letter.

"It is not merely true then that the MACC is a horse of the BN regime, but the truth is, the MACC enjoys being ridden by the BN."

Amizudin told Malaysiakini that he has yet to receive a response from the commission. He said he is seeking answers because he had faced disciplinary action from his party over his report and had been isolated by friends who did not understand the reasons for his action.

On Feb 27, Amizudin claimed that two senior politicians - one of whom was then serving in the state government - had verbally abused him for bringing up the charges. He also claimed to have bank slips and text-messages showing that money was deposited into their personal accounts.

The Penang government has since frozen operations of three quarries in central Seberang Prai to facilitate investigations into the under-declaration of royal revenue.

When contacted, Lathifah's personal assistant has confirmed receipt of Amizudin's letter, but the MACC director was not available for comment.

- laporan Roziyah Mahamad.

Sorrylah!!

Anwar and the ever increasing crowd........

The more the powers-that-be appear to harass him, the bigger the crowds that come to hear his version of political reality. Clearly, pressure on their man whets his supporters' appetite for what may well be dubbed the 'Anwar Ibrahim 360' show: the PKR supremo's overall take, delivered in windmill fashion, on what is happening to the politics, economy, religion, and people of Malaysia.

On Tuesday night, a crowd of about 10,000 had braved pouring rain in Rasah, Negri Sembilan, to hear Anwar and DAP's Lim Kit Siang lambast the Umno-led BN for its high-intensity campaign to induce defections from Pakatan Rakyat's ranks and for alleged unleashing the police force and the anti-corruption body, MACC, against the opposition's elected representatives.

Earlier in the week, police had dispersed a crowd at the Sultan Sulaiman Club in Kampong Baru, Kuala Lumpur. The crowd gathered to celebrate the second anniversary of the political tsunami that had gained for the opposition control of four states and enhanced standing in one.

There followed a gathering at an indoor stadium in Shah Alam which also drew sizeable support but the exhibition of popular sentiment at Rasah, in inclement conditions, was the surest indicator that Pakatan's taking public their case against undue BN harassment was catching on compellingly. The 20,000 crowd that turned up at the Tapak Expo in Seberang Jaya last night waited patiently until 11pm for Anwar to appear.

Earlier it had listened with applause, polite and intermittent, to supporting speakers, which included PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, Penang deputy chief ministers P Ramasamy and Mansor Othman, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Karpal Singh. Abdul Hadi's disclosure that a motor accident causing the deaths of some ardent supporters back home in Marang, Terengganu, explained his hastened turn at the lectern which he used to moving effect by saying that Anwar's caliber and present privations made it imperative that Pakatan continue to support him for the role of parliamentary opposition leader.

Justification for that position is tenuous now that defections have dropped Anwar's party, PKR, to second place in the tally of opposition MPs. The post normally goes to the leader of the party with the highest number of seats.

Guan Eng warms up crowd....

At last night's gathering, the fact that a shower had cooled the heat of the earlier part of the evening helped reduce the people's discomfort at standing for long among concretions of parked cars, motorcycles and human beings. There was relief when the main attraction appeared about 15 minutes later than he usually does – 10.45pm is Anwar's usual turn at the lectern. He had rushed to the place after addressing a gathering at Sungai Chenaam in Nibong Tebal. The crowd at this Malay hamlet, composed mainly of fishermen and farmers, was about 5,000.

Lim Guan Eng, who had preceded him at Sungai Chenaam and exited earlier to warm-up the crowd at Seberang Jaya, was speaking when Anwar arrived, pausing to allow the emcee to hail the PKR leader as 'wira negara' (nation's hero). Anwar spoke after DAP's wheelchair-bound chairman Karpal had done his rousing little bit to assure the people that his lack of locomotion was no impediment to his fervour in legal espousal of Anwar and determination to see Pakatan emplaced in Putrajaya.

Anwar's now much-delayed turn at the podium meant he had to race through his speech, but not at the expense of his singular ability at mixing high flown speculation with street vernacular. This saw him quote the Malay thinker Za'aba, fetching a counsel of this reformist intellectual uttered in 1920 no less, and dovetailing it with the necessity for imperative reform to Malaysia's political culture.

Anwar's ability to mix high and low on issues to do with religion and secular concerns, culture and politics, and also of his interactions with foreign and domestic leaders, was all on evidence in a fast-paced speech of about 45 minutes' duration. He made it all sound he had a good grasp of the whole diorama of Malaysian history and that his lyrical grace under repressive pressure – he said the cops were waiting to question him on the morrow - was a thing the people could always count on.

That appeared to be what the crowd wanted to see from him, for many did not wait until the end to depart. Having cooled their heels until his late arrival and been sufficiently gratified, they, near to midnight, began to straggle out of the sprawling grounds only to find people leaning on the guard rails in the distant periphery, still intent on the speaker's content, audible through strategically dispersed speakers.

The lure of Anwar's rhetorical magic is a thing of surprise, even to frequent listeners. -terence netto

Anwar disiasat polis pula.........

Trend menyoalsiasat pemimpin Pakatan bermula beberapa minggu sebelum sidang Parlimen bermula 15 Mac depan.

Can Anwar Ibrahim be parliamentary opposition leader.........

Can Anwar Ibrahim be parliamentary opposition leader when his party, PKR, has lost its position as holder of the largest number of seats among opposition parties? This question has surfaced in the wake of the expulsion of Zulkifli Noordin, MP for Kulim Bandar Baru, from PKR last Saturday for flagrant breaches of party and Pakatan Rakyat etiquette.

The sacking brought to 27 the number of MPs PKR tallies up in Parliament (including one from PSM which ran under PKR banner), down from a table-topping 31 that conferred on Anwar the role of opposition leader, if not by arithmetical logic then by dint of the PKR supremo's stature as putative leader of the Pakatan coalition.

Before the departures from the PKR stable, DAP had the second largest number of seats at 28, and PAS had 23. Ibrahim Ali, MP for Pasir Mas, consigned himself to the independent category despite having won his seat on a PAS ticket. Two MPs belonging to the Sabah party, SAPP, departed the BN fold in 2008 to become independents.

After three MPs - Zahrain Mohd Hashim (Bayan Baru), Tan Tee Beng (Nibong Tebal) and Mohsin Samsuri (Bagan Serai) – left PKR to become independents in quick succession in the last three weeks, the party was tied with the DAP as the largest bloc among opposition MPs. The sacking of Zulkifli, a move so long delayed that when it occurred, the fact it would relegate PKR to the second largest bloc of MPs among the opposition was elided from calculations of its impact on the opposition's hierarchy in Parliament.

Not that the calculation would have stayed the hand of decision in the matter, but the cathartic flush felt by the party over its release from a suppurating wound was undeniable. It was a very much a case of 'Be gone and damn the consequences'. Further, DAP and PAS' unhesitating backing of the iconic Anwar for continued tenancy as opposition leader helped mute the consideration that Pakatan is not yet a legal entity. Hence a decision by this unregistered body lacks legal force.

Parliamentary rules can be arcane and an interpretation in favour of Anwar's continued tenancy is unlikely to be made, given the trend of decisions from the speaker's chair. Anwar's occupation of the role is considered vital to his keeping together a coalition whose intramural tensions are sublimated in the face of repression from the Umno-dominated BN.

In recent weeks, this pressure has reached new heights with a plethora of police reports lodged against Pakatan MPs for alleged sundry offences and there has been an intensification of attempts to induce defections from its fold. Pakatan is being put through the wringer. If it emerges from its ordeal largely intact, its mettle and that of its critical leaders would be deemed 'Putrajaya-ready'.- Terence Netto

Pakatan Rakyat sambut 2 tahun kejayaannya tapi dicemburui.......
