Polis nak cari Alvin Tan hingga ke ‘lubang cacing’...

Photo: Buenos dias!

- tmi

Blogger seks tiada peluang dapat suaka politik negara lain, kata peguam

After pig snout post, sex blogger takes on IGP...

A fugitive sex blogger has locked horns with the police chief, criticising Khalid Abu Bakar for purportedly being more keen on launching a crackdown under the Sedition Act, as opposed to arresting criminals.

"If only the inspector-general of police is as passionate in fighting crime and corruption as he is in catching people for sedition," posted Alvin Tan on his Facebook page today.

He was responding to Khalid, who yesterday vowed that the police would leave no stone unturned in locating Tan.

Khalid was livid with Tan’s earlier Facebook posting depicting doctored photos of various leaders, including the prime minister and his wife, with pig snouts.

Among those in the photos was Khalid (right) himself.

In an Utusan Malaysia report, the police chief described Tan's action as rude and claimed that the blogger wanted to challenge the authorities.

"He thinks he can run. However, each country has its own regulations and we will eventually catch him," said Khalid in reference to reports that the blogger was seeking asylum in the US.

Meanwhile, Utusan also quoted Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar as describing Tan as a "coward".

"If he is brave, come back to Malaysia and say those things. No need to run to the US. He is a coward and only talks after running from Malaysia.

"Tell us upfront. We (Umno Youth) are willing to wait. Do not be a coward," he emphasised.

Political asylum

Meanwhile, Tan's ex-girlfriend Vivian Lee said she had expected him to jump bail as he had suggested the idea before.

"Tan suggested the idea of seeking political asylum once.

"He did not discuss his plan with me further. He can pursue his dreams and resume his conquests in the US without any baggage," she added on her Facebook page.

However, Lee has refused to follow in his footsteps.

"I don't see the point of living a life on the run. We still have a full life ahead of us, and the life of a fugitive wouldn't suit me.

"I was brought up by my parents to deal with any issue in front of us, and running away whenever there's trouble isn't a wise approach," she added.

In a related development, Astro Awani quoted Bukit Aman deputy CID chief Amar Singh as saying the police are probing Tan under sedition again following the remarks the blogger made on Facebook.

"Members of the public have lodged reports against Tan. Upon this, we initiated an investigation under the Sedition Act," he said today.

Tan along with Lee had been charged under Sedition Act last year following a blog posting 'Selamat Berbuka Puasa with bak kut teh... fragrant, delicious and appetising'.- mk

Political asylum not a way out of a criminal charge

Fugitive’s life not for me, says sex blogger’s ex-partner Vivian Lee...

The former partner of sex blogger Alvin Tan said she was not surprised that the latter had skipped bail and is seeking asylum in the United States, saying the plans were not discussed with her.

"He can pursue his dreams and resume his conquests in the US without any baggage," Vivian Lee, who together with Tan had blogged about their sex life under the name Alvivi, told The Star.

Lee said she was relieved that Tan was safe.

"Now that he's made it safely to the US, I'm relieved because I finally know that he's OK.

“I do not feel bitter and I do not blame him for anything. I wish him well and all the best," she said as quoted by the paper, adding that she was not sure if they would ever meet again.

She revealed that she had sent emails and text messages to Tan after his disapperance but had not received any response.

She only knew that he was in the US after friends informed her based on news reports.

Lee, 25, also said she was against the idea of running away from her upcoming trial following the couple's offensive and controversial Ramadan greeting on Facebook in July last year.

"I don't see the point of living a life on the run. We still have a full life ahead of us, and life as a fugitive wouldn't suit me," she told The Star.

"I was brought up by my parents to face and deal with any issue in front of us, and running away whenever there's trouble isn't a wise approach."

The pair, who are former law students at the National University of Singapore, first came under the spotlight following their raunchy blog postings.

But it was their post of a pork dish and a Ramadan greeting last year that landed them in hot water, and even in jail briefly, after they were charged under the Sedition Act and the Film Censorship Act.

Tan violated his bail conditions while on a supposed working trip to Singapore and is now on Interpol's wanted list.

After lying low for a while, he emerged on social media, speaking of his plans for asylum in the US.

The 26-year-old Tan told The Malaysian Insider recently that his decision to flee his homeland was to escape the government's "tyranny" as well as the "ignorance" of ordinary Malaysians.

He said that he had tried to convince Lee to flee but she had decided against it.

"I already applied to the court to get our passports released using my personal funds, at no expense to her. What more does she want?

"What I did not do was to fund her escape, because, why should I? We are both independent adults who are supposed to be able to take care of ourselves.

"She has a lot of growing up to do if she believes that it is my responsibility to take her along. I mean, hello, she is the university graduate here, not me. She should be more than capable – much more than me – to take care of herself," he had said.

Sementara Zulkifli diwakili Mohd Ruzaini sementara Utusan Malaysia diwakili Datuk Firoz Hussein (Tetuan Hafarizam).

– tmi

Zul retracts posting on Syed Husin, apologises...

Former Kulim Bandar Baru MP Zulkifli Noordin and Utusan Malaysia have agreed to pay an undisclosed amount in costs to former PKR deputy president, senator Syed Husin Ali.

This follows the former Perkasa leader agreeing to retract his defamatory blog posting and the Umno-owned daily agreeing to withdraw its article quoting the blog.

Zulkifli also apologised for the blog posting titled ‎'Anjing-anjing Pencen' (retired dogs) remark that inadvertently referred to Syed Husin, and also to withdraw his counter-claim on the former PKR deputy president.

The settlement was recorded by Kuala Lumpur High Court judicial commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera today.

Utusan Malaysia which quoted the blog posting, paid costs to Syed Husin.

The Umno owned daily also agreed to withdraw an article titled ‘Zul Noordin nafi dakwaan Syed Husin’ (Zul Noordin refutes Syed Husin's claim), dated Nov 20, 2011.

Zulkifli's apology in open court was read by his lawyer, Mohd Ruzaini Zulkifli.

Syed Husin (left), as the plaintiff, had testified mid-way in the trial and the hearing was scheduled to resume today only for it to be settled.

He was represented by N Surendran and Latheefa Koya, while Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin appeared for Utusan Malaysia.

Claim made in blog

In 2012, Zulkifli had claimed in his blog that Syed Husin had made him an offer to vacate his parliamentary seat.

In return, Zulkifli alleged Syed Husin said PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim would offer him a post in a Selangor state government subsidiary worth between RM50,000 and RM60,000 a month.

Zulkifli’s claim was reported in Utusan.

This resulted in Syed Husin reportedly filing a RM10 million suit against Zulkifli and Utusan.

Syed Husin's statement of claim stated that the defamatory words meant that he was guilty of corrupt practice, had committed a criminal offence, was a hypocrite, and unfit as a politician and leader of a political party.

It also meant that Syed Husin was a dishonourable politician and unfit to hold a post as a senator in the Dewan Negara.

Syed Husin claimed the blog posting and Utusan's publication had injured his character and reputation, and he was seeking RM10 million in damages, exemplary damages and also an injunction to restrain the defendants from publishing similar libelous material.- mk

Saari, Hasnul menghadap lembaga disiplin PAS...

“Parti saya Pakatan Rakyat,” katanya.

Beliau bagaimanapun menegaskan tiada hasrat langsung melompat parti. - mk

Saari, Hasnul to face PAS discipline tomorrow...

Two PAS state assemblypersons who defied their party and sided with PKR and DAP in the Selangor crisis, will face the disciplinary board tomorrow.

Hulu Kelang state assemblyperson Saari Sungib said that he and his colleague, Morib state assemblyperson Hasnul Baharuddin, have been summoned to explain themselves.

Saari, who received a hero's welcome at a DAP function last night, insisted that he will not quit PAS.

"I am confident if I explain my reasons and the steps I took, and if the (disciplinary) committee is fair, knowledgeable, objective, not influenced by anyone and fixed on upholding justice and truth, I will still be a PAS member," he told Malaysiakini last night.

He said that if PAS sacked him anyway, it will not bode well with Pakatan.

"If I am punished, Hasnul is punished, and we are sacked... I will still remain with Pakatan.

"I will be an activist or a politician without a political party, my party will be Pakatan," he asserted.

Meanwhile, Hasnul who earlier joked that he could still contest in the elections under DAP stressed he has no intention to hop parties.

"I do not intend to jump parties, what I did had risks and I will face disciplinary action," he said, adding that his chances of being a state assemblyperson in the general election were also dim.

"But I acted on principle. At that time, the Pakatan government had to be defended," he said.

He added he was prepared to accept whatever decision the party made.

This will be first time Saari and Hasnul will be explaining themselves to the party in more than a month after unilaterally signing a statutory declaration to support PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (left) as menteri besar on Aug 14.

Wan Azizah had the support of 28 state assemblypersons from DAP and PKR and the PAS duo acted as tiebreaker in the 56-member state assembly.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had refused to support Wan Azizah who was backed by DAP and PKR amid concerns that the Islamic party may join forces with arch-rival Umno to form its own government.

The Selangor palace eventually appointed PKR deputy president Azmin Ali as menteri besar on Tuesday after PAS and partners DAP and PKR could not agree on a common candidate.

Both Saari and Hasnul have been branded as traitors by some PAS leaders with Hadi labelling them as lackeys (barua) and accusing them of being bought over.- mk

Lim (seated, 2nd right) with some of the victims of the gold bar sale, holding their police reports against the Umno man, in the CM's office in Komtar, Penang today. - The Malaysian Insider pic by Looi Sue-Chern, September 28, 2014.
Guan Eng wants cops to nab Umno man over RM4 million gold deal...

The Penang government has called on the police to take action against a former youth leader of a state Umno branch, who allegedly cheated a group of people over the sale of gold bars worth more than RM4 million.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today that he would ask state police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi to speed up investigations, as the victims had lodged police reports several months ago.

Lim claimed that checks revealed that the suspect was an Umno member and a former youth leader in an Umno branch in the state.

"He was also believed to be one of the people who trespassed into the state legislative assembly building on May 19 this year," said Lim, citing an incident a few months ago where a group of protesters broke through a security barrier in response to Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer's infamous "celaka Umno" (Umno be damned) remark.

"We hope the police can investigate and take action quickly. There is no doubt that this is a case of cheating that has affected more than 17 families," he said at his office in Komtar today.

Several of the victims of the scam met with Lim today to air their grouses.

One of the victims, Abdul Wahab S. Mohd Mydin, 45, claimed the man had offered him and 16 others in his group attractive prices to buy their gold bars, which they had previously bought from Genneva (M) Sdn Bhd.

The prices were above the market price and the deal was that they must hand over their gold bars and the man would pay them in installments via post-dated cheques, he said.

"He told us it was unnecessary to put things in black and white. All we had to do was give him the gold bars and he will present the cheques.

"He said if he failed to furnish the cheques, we can go to the police. He said so himself, as if it was nothing," the factory manager said.

Because the deal sounded good, Abdul Wahab and 16 others, agreed to the transaction of selling a total of 16,635 grammes of gold bars to the man for RM4,946,960 in October and November last year.

The group managed to cash in a total of RM710,349 with the cheques they received. The subsequent post-dated cheques for RM1,570,161 bounced while the remaining RM2,665,108 were in cheques that have not been cashed in.

"We never got the remaining RM4,235,269 promised. The cheques could not be cashed.

"He told us not to cash in the cheques in December, saying that he was having problems with the bank. Then, he made more excuses to avoid paying.

"In early June, we decided to cash in the cheques because the period has matured but we found out we could not get the money because he had closed his bank account," Abdul Wahab said, adding that they want their gold bars back.

He said all of them had lodged police reports on the matter but were told that the case was too complicated as it involved a large sum of money.

"I lodged mine in June. Before that I had also lodged one against him in March for threatening me after I went to look for him at his home twice.

Abdul Wahab believed there could be more victims in Seberang Jaya, Parit Buntar and Kuala Kangsar.

Another victim, Mohd Nazari Mohd Shariff, 48, claimed the man was still free and was going around in his luxury car in Penang.

Meanwhile, Lim urged those who had fallen victim to the man to contact Abdul Wahab or his political secretary Wong Hon Wai, who is also the Air Itam assemblyman. – tmi

Nik Aziz - Kekalahan Pengkalan Kubor kekalahan Pakatan juga...

Mursyidul Am PAS Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat berkata calon PAS di Pilihan Raya Kecil Pengkalan Kubor adalah calon PKR juga, memandangkan mereka bersetuju dengan pemilihan calon. – Gambar fail The Malaysian Insider, 27 September, 2014.

– tmi

PAS’s defeat in Pengkalan Kubor is also Pakatan’s, says Nik Aziz

Kelantan Akan Jatuh Kepada BN...

Calon BN Mat Razi Mat Ail memperoleh undi sebanyak 9,981 manakala calon PAS Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim mendapat 7,326 undi.

Pengkalan Kubor loss:Beginning of an end to PAS-rule in Kelantan...

Is the undignified loss of PAS in the Pengkalan Kubor by-election the beginning of an end to the Islamist party’s 20-year hold of Kelantan?

The fact that Barisan Nasional (BN) increased its majority win with a thumping 2,635 votes mean that PAS not only lost, it was whipped badly on all counts.

Initial indicators revealed that BN or namely Umno garnered support from the old and young alike as well as from a high number of Malaysians of Siamese descent.

Tumpat is essentially a PAS stronghold for the last two decades as the party controls the parliament and three state seats, with the exception of Pengkalan Kubor.

And not only that, the party big wigs are all incumbents of Tumpat and its state seats.

The Tumpat parliamentarian is none other than its former secretary-general Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar, and the Pasir Pekan seat is held by Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yackop.

The other seats are Kelaboran, whose assemblyman is Mohd Zaki Ibrahim, the state PAS secretary, and the Wakaf Baru assemblyman is PAS state executive councillor Che Abdullah Mat Nawi.

With such strong local personalities, yet the party could not deliver a win in a constituency which is dominated by them.

BN’s Mat Razi Mat Ail, an ulama, defeated PAS’ Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim with a wider majority than in the 13th General Election (GE13).

Mat Razi polled 9,961 votes against Wan Rosdi’s 7,335. Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary received 37 votes and lost his deposit.

The by-election was forced following the death of the three-term assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar last month.

In GE13, Noor Zahidi retained the seat with a majority of 1,736 votes, beating Saharun Ibrahim of PKR and Izat Bukhary, who also stood as an Independent.

While the former incumbent Noor Zahidi left behind a good legacy in terms of his excellent service track record, the fact that PAS lost with a higher majority is daunting to the political observers.

Things are getting complicated for PAS in Kelantan as the era of their revered leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has almost certainty come to an end.

The 82-year-old vacated his mentri besar post after leading Kelantan PAS to victory in GE13.

The party and PKR holds 37 out of the 45 state seats.

Nik Aziz is also ailing, and he could only campaign twice throughout the 12-day intense lobbying for votes.

To complicate matters, PAS is also battling an internal strife over their role in Pakatan Rakyat as well as the pent-up rift between the moderates versus the hardline ulama.

But victory was never easy as revealed by the state Umno liaison secretary Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad.

“We were emotionally hurting as the late Noor Zahidi was a beloved colleague. We had shed tears when we spoke about our desire to deliver a win for him,” Alwi said.

In choosing the winning candidate, Alwi said they sought total support from the Tumpat Umno division since Mat was relatively an unknown within the group.

This is the first time in a while that Umno was united in Kelantan and every state leader bandied around one general, he noted.

In the long-run, Pengkalan Kubor may be the necessary catalyst to unhinge PAS from their stranglehold on Kelantan.

“Kelantan voters are a unique lot. They will hate you if they feel that you are not doing your job. This applies to PAS or Umno.”

PAS has lost the state before and so has Umno.

Therefore, it may not be a big surprise if the Islamist party loses the state in the next general election.

But it is a tad early for such a bold prediction though, says Alwi.

For political observer Mohd Sayuti Omar, PAS’ political fortune may have been dented as it was Umno who fielded an ulama. PAS depended on a contractor.- Ian McIntyre, theantdaily

After 20 days in lock-up, Ali arrested for 4th time...

After spending 20 days in several police lock-ups nationwide for various offences under the Sedition Act, activist Ali Abd Jalil is nowhere near freedom after cops arrested him for the fourth time in a bid to keep him behind bars.

Ali's lawyer New Sin Yew said his client was due to be released at 12.30pm today after police managed only to obtain a one-day remand extension yesterday despite requesting for three days.

"At 9am, Ali was brought by police to the Johor Baru Magistrate's Court to be released, but right after the release, he was immediately re-arrested and taken to Nusajaya district police headquarters.

"They (cops) immediately made a remand application and were given three days' (detention for) Ali," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Prior to this, Ali was charged at the Selayang Sessions Court before being re-arrested and charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court, both for purportedly insulting the monarchy under the Sedition Act.

Subsequently he was again arrested and taken to the Johor Baru Selatan district police headquarters for another allegedly seditious remark.

New said the arrest this time was for the same offence but police had used a different section under the same act to detain him longer.

"They want to charge him eventually but what they are doing now appears to be trying to punish him.

"Even murder suspects are only remanded for 14 days. Ali has been in detention for 20 days and with the latest remand, it will be 23 days," he said.

New criticised the police for taking Ali along on a "road show" across the country by repeatedly arresting him and bringing him to various police district headquarters.

"The police can centralise all the investigation in one police station. There is no need to drag him all over the country.

"If every time they arrest him and bring to a different police station for detention, then the detention becomes indefinite.

"That is wrong and goes against the intention of the criminal justice system," he added.- mk

Tangkap Dr M atas dakwaan menghasut? KPN nak tangkap seorang mualaf pun dia kelepiaq...

Ditanya sekiranya polis sedang menjalankan siasatan, Mahathir berkata: “Saya rakyat biasa. Jika saya berdepan tangkapan, sila lakukan.”

“Ketika masa saya, saya penjarakan semua.

Beliau memberi contoh krisis kewangan 1997.

“Saya hendak menumbuk batang hidung George Soros. Saya mencercanya. Tidak wajar nilai matawang negara membangun diserang,” tegasnya.

Mahathir memang hebat berkata-kata.

Jangan mimpilah kita hendak melihat beliau didakwa Akta Hasutan selagi BN-Umno kekal berkuasa.- Ng Kee Seng, theantdaily

Pengkalan Kubor- UMNO,we came, we saw, we bribe...

BN has won the Pangkalan Kubor state seat in Kelantan. We know the slogan- we came, we bribed, and we cheated. It retained its seat. The BN got a larger majority because it paid voters.

BN spent millions. It also prevented almost 2000 Malaysians from crossing over into Rantau Panjang. Also, Kelantanese outside did not return.

Just as they did in Teluk Intan, the BN bribed its way to victory. That is also the Najib method of winning elections.

It’s no big deal then. The victory was achieved partly because there is currently some bad blood within the Pakatan camp.I hope PAS understands the loss.

Let us take on some of the issues raised.

Photo: BUKANKAH MENTERI MELAYU NI pelajar terbaik cgpa 3.85.. Kenapa bila masuk UMNO & jd menteri terus jadi bangang camni..

KALAU ADA SIAPA PULA MENTERI LEBIH BANGANG...

UMNO’s information chief, MP Ahmad Maslan says Putrajaya may actually be supporting 3 months of any rakyat’s livelihood. This is achieved through all the subsidies given out, all forms of welfare assistance and BR1M. These, says Ahmad Maslan are the hallmarks of a good, benign and responsible government.

To that, we say only the smallish mind would want to gloat about it.  Sadly, the smirking comes from ignorance. What the government programs do is affirm the existence of severe income inequalities in the country and the economic hardships experienced by the poor.

More and more people require assistance because they do. Incomes have fallen behind- the cost of living has gone up and the standard of living for these people has gone down because life is costly.

I hope no rational thinking Malay buys the idea that economic hardships experienced by them are the result of natural turn of events. The truth is, they are the result of mismanagement of the economy, incompetence, corruption, bad governance, wrong policies and even stupidity.

Don’t ever trivialise the hardships as being caused by the natural turn of events. All were man made and caused by the incompetence of the government of the day.

The Malays must break the mental bondage. I have experienced this first hand and shall use an example to illustrate the readily-excusing mentality of the Malays which UMNO takes advantage of.

Raub is a small town with probably around 100, 000 inhabitants. Water shortage is the norm rather than exception. Every other day, there will be water interruptions and stoppage.  Some people in certain areas go without water for a week.

The response by Malays and Chinese is revealing. Malays endure being without water for a few days attributing the shortage to that’s how it is. Chinese will go up in arms, calling the ADUns and MP to do something. We do of course short of actually carrying buckets of water.

I see two different thinking operating here. The Malays are ready to endure and accept  water shortage as part of the natural order of things. So they are ready to excuse the shortage and endure. The Chinese don’t.

The Malays are not likely to consider that the water shortages may be caused by wrong investments taken in the past, the supply of defective and substandard pipes, bad water distribution management, lack of investments in facilities etc.

While water is indeed a product of nature, its delivery to homes is not. It’s a function of human management and involvement in many forms.

The Malays need to question everything and never take things as they are. Things are never as they are.

Its not government's money.

Secondly, the government is spending what it takes from the people. Government itself has no money other than what it takes in the form of taxes.

Next year, the government wants to be leech-efficient. It wants to suck whatever can be extracted from people.  That is why GST will be carried out- it’s a more efficient method of collecting taxes.

Now, let us get back to the issue of the Malay problem. This issue is played over and over again. The contest in Pengakan Kubor is between 2 Malay parties.

Something must be wrong when 2 Malays contest, the party that gets whacked is the non-Malay. Is the Malay problem caused by non-Malay or by the government that is in power? Who is responsible for the policies, who controls governance, who controls the treasury?

The UMNO Malays must have outsourced everything to their Chinese partners,  so now it’s justifiable to lay blame on the Chinese.

The cat is out of the bag- UMNO has been subcontracting the management of this country to the Chinese. But UMNO is the Malay party fighting for the 4 institutions that are sacrosanct to the Malays no? - Dato' Mohd.Ariff Sabri bin Hj. Abdul Aziz@sakmongkol ak47

Photo: Dato' Ahmad Maslan bercakap lagi! Sebelum ini BN tanggung rakyat 3 bulan. Hari ini BN sumbangkan 95% pembangunan di Selangor. Terima kasih Menteri!

"Ahmad Maslan: 95% pembangunan S'gor disumbang k'jaan BN"

Pengkalan Kubor - Berkubur dah kah Pakatan Rakyat...

Peratusan keluar mengundi hanya 73% berbanding 80% semasa Pilihan Raya Umum ke-13 (PRU13) tahun lepas.

Beliau berkata kekalahan menunjukkan menteri besar baru Datuk Ahmad Yaakob gagal menunjukkan kekuatannya sejak mengambil alih daripada Nik Aziz tahun lepas.

– tmi

Pengkalan Kubor loss shows PAS cannot go solo...

PAS’s loss in the Pengkalan Kubor by-election yesterday proves that the party cannot survive without its allies in Pakatan Rakyat even in its stronghold, political analysts say.

They told The Malaysian Insider that the Islamist party was suffering from too many internal problems to single-handedly wrest the state assembly seat from Barisan Nasional (BN).

“This campaign reflects the strength PAS has without its partners, in its own state,” said Merdeka Center executive director, Ibrahim Suffian.

He said without its partners, PAS largely derived its strength from the personal appeal of its spiritual advisor, Datuk Seri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

“Now he is in the twilight of his years, he is frail, no longer in the forefront, you can really see the dampening of mood and lack of enthusiasm among PAS and its supporters.”

This lack of enthusiasm, as well as the fact that the by-election was sandwiched in between the school holidays and Hari Raya Haji celebrations, had translated into a lower voter turnout, said Ibrahim.

A low turnout indicated that people from out of town, who were more likely to vote the opposition, had not returned to cast their ballots, he said.

BN's Mat Razi Mat Ali won the Pengkalan Kubor by-election with a bigger majority by defeating PAS's Wan Ibrahim Wan Rosdi, gaining 2,635 extra votes.

Mat Razi obtained 9,961 votes, beating Wan Rosdi who got 7,326 votes, while Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary only managed 38 votes.

Voter turnout out was at 73%, compared to 80% last year.

The Pengkalan Kubor by-election was held just days after PAS'sdivisive 60th annual Muktamar, which saw different factions come to a head as they discussed the future of the party.

It also came amidst the Selangor menteri besar (MB) impasse that had soured ties among PR following PAS’s decision to break ranks from its allies by refusing to support their choice of MB.

Throughout the campaign, DAP and PKR top leaders were noticeably absent, leaving PAS to manage the campaign alone in Pengkalan Kubor.

“The internal issues between PR had also dampened the mood of some within the electorate a little,” said Ibrahim.

But he doubted that the Selangor affair, and PAS’s actions throughout it, had made an impact on the by-election, given how remote Pengkalan Kubor was.

Dr Wong Chin Huat of the Penang Institute said the by-election hinted at what was in store for PAS’s political future if it continues to break ranks from DAP and PKR.

“Pengkalan Kubor is not just a lesson but a mini-scenario for their future if they were to go it alone,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

He added that the loss showed that Datuk Ahmad Yaakob “could not hold his forte” since taking over as MB from Nik Aziz last year.

“He’s trying to be more assertive than Nik Aziz, he’s been pushing strongly for hudud and selling religion heavily, but it didn’t gain traction,” said Wong.

Independent political analyst, Khoo Kay Peng, said PAS has a long way to go to mend itself if it wanted to win support from voters, especially if PKR and DAP were not around to help.

“Pakatan definitely didn’t pull their weight for PAS, but what affected it most was the factions within PAS itself,” he said.

“The by-election results shows the need for the top leadership to give the party a clearer direction, and to resolve the battle between the conservatives and the moderates.” – tmi

PAS 'menang boo, jawatan tergadai'

How did PAS lose an exco seat in Selangor...

After newly-minted Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali announced his new state executive council line-up today, it became clear that PAS lost an exco position to PKR, with its quota in the state government being reduced from four to three seats.

While some lauded this as a deserving punishment for PAS for its inconsistent position that aggravated the Selangor crisis that was started by PKR, others are angry that PAS, which has 15 state assemblypersons, should have less positions than PKR, which has only 13 seats.

PAS' conduct may have been given cause for its representation to be reduced, but the Islamic party put the nail in its own coffin after it effectively disowned two of its Selangor  assemblpersons by launching a series of vitriolic attacks against them for taking PKR's side in the crisis.

For one, PAS was seen as being inconsistent with its initial decision on the menteri besar crisis, even though its muktamar, which took place at the peak of the fiasco, was themed "Terus Beristiqamah" (to be consistent in one's struggle).

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang (left), in a series of strange moves, took three varying positions in the Selangor crisis.

These ranged from nominating PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her deputy Azmin Ali as menteri besar candidates to "leaving it to the Selangor palace to decide" and, subsequently, submitting PAS' own candidates for the top job.

These moves courted criticism from within PAS, particularly from the reform-minded professionals, dubbed the "Erdogan", and also riled up Pakatan Rakyat supporters who are pro-Anwar Ibrahim and stood by the PKR decision to push Wan Azizah as menteri besar.

The pro-Hadi faction promptly responded, and fiercely as well, to these criticisms at their party's three-day muktamar that began last Wednesday, which saw the Erdogan leaders being booed down, fuelling the heated meeting in Batu Pahat.

In a bid to cool down the tensed atmosphere at the muktamar, PAS deputy spiritual leader Haron Din implored delegates not to raise issues that can aggravate the cracks between the competing faction.

Respecting the call, delegates and party leaders struck a reconciliation on the last day of the muktamar, in a bid to calm the situation.

But the muktamar concluded with Hadi's stinging, and now infamous lackey (barua) and broker speech, which shocked those within and outside PAS, reopening the party's wounds which were, before this, seen as being on the mend.

Hadi's target was none other than the PAS assemblypersons in Selangor, Saari Sungib (Hulu Kelang) and Hasnul Baharuddin (Morib), who sided with PKR in the state's menteri besar crisis.

Disowned assemblypersons

Vexed by the party president's broadside, Saari challenged Hadi to produce proof that he was "bought over" by PKR to sign a statutory declaration in support of Wan Azizah.

Saari (left), a respected Islamist and former Internal Security Act detainee, also reiterated that he was prepared to be sacked from PAS and prosecuted for corruption if Hadi could produce any such evidence.

"I don't know what he meant by 'broker', 'lackey', 'stolen' and 'bought', as before this I have never heard about me being a 'broker', 'lackey' or 'being bought'," Saari was quoted as saying in reference to Hadi's speech.

Hadi's position, coupled with the protest stunts at the muktamar, did indeed deal a blow to the party's image.

Even though the "Kajang Move" was initiated by PKR with the aim of resolving its internal strife by installing a new Selangor menteri besar, deeper rifts have appeared in PAS.

The Selangor crisis can be likened to PKR suffering a flu for a mere few days but PAS, which contacted the infection, came down with severe fever, and which has spanned months.

Today, PAS has lost an exco seat as it is presumed to only have 13 state assemblypersons, although it was compensated with the deputy speaker position.

Prior to this, and aside from the menteri besar position, PKR and DAP only held three exco posts, while PAS had four.

The general notion has always been that PKR, is the smallest partner in the Selangor Pakatan coalition with 14 assemblypersons, and later 13 after it sacked incumbent Selangor menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (left) from the party, while DAP and PAS had 15 respectively.

However, following the Selangor crisis, PAS is seeing two of its assemblypersons as "traitors" who had gone to PKR's side, even though they never renounced their loyalty to PAS.

As a result of the internal split in PAS, PKR now emerges as the strongest Pakatan party in Selangor, thereby bolstering its claim for the four exco positions it now holds, as well as the seat of menteri besar.

While PAS is still licking its wounds amid continued resentment between the pro-Pakatan and pro-Hadi groups, PKR has immediately moved to close ranks with Azmin bringing in different factions in PKR into his new government.

PKR unites, PAS remains split

Former deputy speaker Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Seri Setia), seen as a supporter of the Kajang Move, and rival Amirudin Shari (Batu Caves), who is an Azmin loyalist, were both brought into the exco line-up.

In contrast to PAS, PKR's bid to rebuild unity among its ranks is a much easier task as friction over the Selangor crisis has largely been kept under wraps and away from the media limelight

The manoeuvrings between Azmin's supporters, who have been wanting him as menteri besar, and rivals Saifuddin Nasution Ismail or Rafizi Ramli, who engineered the Kajang Move to install Wan Azizah (right) in the top post, were generally less confrontational, despite some isolated outbursts.

PKR, which also held its congress at the height of the Selangor menteri besar crisis, did not turn its annual general assembly into an open warfare. In fact, the congress was seen as rather tame and lethargic.

In contrast, competing PAS leaders publicly declared open war and their supporters hurled vitroil at one another at the muktamar, and in the social media as well.

As the Selangor saga comes to a conclusion, PAS has come out as the biggest loser, while PKR has consolidated its position, though not due to its own political savvy.

Instead, the outcome is a reflection of PAS' own political absurdity, fuelled by the Islamic party's political intrigue and unabated struggle between the Erdogan and pro-ulama groups, which have remained unresolved since 2008.

The factionalism within PAS deepened a year before the party election last year and this competition is continuing unabated , with opponents intensifying their rivalry at the muktamar that just ended, setting the tables for the next party elections due next year.

It is not for PAS to resent or blame PKR for tightening its grip on power in Selangor. However, it is seen that the Islamic party requires some serious introspection.

PAS' manoeuvring and subsequent infighting is seen as embodied the fictionial Malay clown Pak Kaduk and in the Malay saying, "menang sorak, kampung tergadai" (Winning the battle, but losing the war).- mk
